Our Experts Are Ready to Help You
When it comes to training your dog, the training doesn’t stop when you leave the trainer. The best training happens at home, as you interact with your dog on a daily basis.
Whether you’re training your dog to stay in the yard through the use of an electric dog fence or teaching your pet to take “no” for an answer, daily life matters!
It doesn’t get much better than a trainer explaining what happens at her own house. This article from Dog Star Daily gives a few great examples of how this works in your home:
1. Ignoring is Effective. If you want to teach a dog not to do something, ignoring is your best first approach. For example, if you’re reading a book and your dog tries to nudge your hand to get attention, it’s okay to ignore it.
Just like anyone else, your dog can learn when it’s appropriate to ask for attention and when to wait, and this is a core way of teaching that awareness.
2. Rewarding is Also Effective! What about when you’re working and your dog let’s you finish without bothering you? That’s a great time to reward with some affection or a toy. Reinforcing the positive behavior will help guarantee more of it in the future.
3. Running Interference. Sometimes, ignoring and rewarding isn’t enough. If your dog is doing something that is dangerous for him or herself or another person, step in and find a way to redirect your dog to another activity.
4. Be Mindful. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when you’re training your dog is being absentminded about how you interact with your dog. If you pet your dog when he’s performing a behavior you don’t want repeated, he will get the message that it’s okay to do that—pay attention to those moments and you’ll see amazing results.
We would never have believed that Mikey could be trained that quickly and easily. We highly recommend Pet Stop to anyone contemplating an electric Pet Fence.
