Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Breaks Ground on Pet Center

Pet Stop • Mar 30, 2013

Last month, we posted about a hospital in Chicago doing something unique: allowing pet visitors to see critically ill patients of all ages. The belief that pets can be therapeutic to patients led Rush University to open their doors to four-legged friends.

Here in Ohio, now; a similar system has begun at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Just last week, the Center broke ground on their brand new Family Pet Center!

On The Need for a Pet Center

John Perentesis is the executive co-director of the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at the Medical Center. He said that pets can be “very therapeutic,” bringing joy, comfort, and a positive attitude to the youngest of critical patients.

The hospital treats children with cancer and other serious illnesses, and these children often face long, intense hospital stays. The hospital seems optimistic that the pet center will bring more happiness to their patients.

The Family Pet Center

While Rush created special guidelines to allow pet visitors, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is doing something unique in creating a building just for visiting pets, and a lot of thought and design has gone into the center.

Visitation areas within the pet center are going to be made completely accessible by both wheelchair and stretcher to try to take away as many limitations as possible and allow many kids visits with their furry friends.

The Family Pet Center will cost over $107,000 to build and is being paid for by a grant It's expected to open in August of this year!
